Professional Web Design, just because they say it is Profesional?
March 31, 2010
When hiring a web design firm to build your company website, there is no question that you should hire a professional to get the job done right. For most people, the act of creating a website is not always a "Do-it-Yourself" project. By doing it yourself you pose much risk to the brand of your company and the first impression people visiting your site may have should your website appear to be sloppy or unprofessional. Today's customer is very cautious and is very judgmental and if their first impression is not good, credibility is decreased and trust is lost. Sometimes just having a web presence isn't good enough, it could be more damaging than you know if it is done incorrectly.
Every web developer or firm claims they are "Professional" and offers "Professional Web Design", how do I know they really are professional?
There are many considerations to factor in making your decision over one firm over the next. Putting aside the cost of the project, you should look for the following aspects.
- Do they have any accreditations from third parties to back up their claim to fame?
- Do they have an online portfolio of work they have done? if so, are there any big names in there?
- If you emailed them with questions, have they replied to your email timely with a clear and precise answer? (Communication is very important.)
- What is your overall impression of the design firm's website?
- What is your impression of their portfolio?
- If you ask them for references, are they able to give you some?
- What kind of training do they have, school? College? University? Self teach?
- When talking to the designer directly, do you get the impression they know what they are talking about (confidence level) or are they feeding you ideas and information that seems off the wall?
When looking for a "Professional Web Designer", you need to listen to your gut and weigh in all the factors above to help make your decision. Unfortunately the largest deciding factor for most people is the price quoted of the project. If the Web Designer happens to excel in all aspects and gives you a great impression but the price is too high for your budget, you then have to ask yourself how much is your company image and branding worth?
